In our proposal we wanted to make Stafford Lake Park better. In our video we talk about the issues of invasive species and the drought. My group was super fun and we each did our part working on the video. One thing we did well was splitting up the work evenly. We assigned each person their part and they were responsible for completing it. Another thing we did well was coming up with new ideas. Our original idea was to interview someone from the park. When that didn't turn out well we just decided to play the part ourselves as you can see in the video above. One thing we could have done better was staying on task. Sometimes we would get distracted and not focus on the video. Another thing we could have done better was time management. We pushed everything towards the end and didn't have much time to edit it. This is important to me cause i learned how to care for natural land and raise awareness for Stafford Lake. I think this is important to society so we don't lose biodiversity.
Terrarium Proposals
Terrarium Reflection
We stuck with our original proposal in representing a drought-resistant ecosystem. For our main plants we used succulents. We scattered them throughout the terrarium with the addition of moss, one cactus, and one leafy plant. We would water our terrarium every other day. Our terrarium was very experimental but actually went better than we expected. Unfortunately our moss and cactus didn't make it but our succulents grew much stronger and bigger and we even managed to grow a random weed! In our terrarium plants would use carbon from the atmosphere and release oxygen. Since our cactus and moss died, those decomposed and created carbon in our soil.
CCD Reflection
For the CCD activity we split up into pairs and worked with along side and instruction packet and the corresponding website to learn about bee colony collapse disorder. The factors affecting CCDis disease and neonicotinoids. Varroa mites are the world's most destructive bee killer. This mite produces viruses, deformed wings, and paralysis for the bee. Scientists are trying to find way to decrease the mite or help the bees become immune to it. I learned how to make and use curve fits. Different equations are best for different sets of data so I learned to do decide which one worked the most efficiently. Before this, opportunity, I honestly knew nothing about bees. I didn't know the dangers bees had to face. Researching about bee CCD gave me new knowledge about hoe important bees are and what we can do to help them.
Socratic Seminar Reflection
In our Socratic seminar we discussed whether or not global warming was a legitimate issue to worry about. The most common factor to global warming is the burning of fossil fuels. Humans burn oil and gas to produce electricity. A really good example would be driving a vehicle. As a result, carbon dioxide is released into our atmosphere and therefore heat is trapped. One thing we could do as a society to prevent global warming would be to drive electric cars. Driving these cars will allow us to use less gases and decrease fossil fuels. As an individual we can carpool to use cars therefore burn less fossil fuels.
